4-10 April 2016

One of the few garbage cans we've seen, of course surrounded
by trash.  If you look closely it says, "Keep The City Clean".

On our P-day we headed out of town, only to get
stuck in this horrible traffic jam - what should
have taken 10 mins to get out of Tema, took
an hour and a half.  The motorcycle is going up
on the lane divider to get around the truck.

We drove past this truck load of live goats who
weren't very happy, crammed in there with
their feet tied together.

Scott and Loel loved this wood carver's
place we stopped at.  This is one of
the things he made.
We arrived at the Aburi Botanical Gardens, after
getting a little lost on dirt roads, through tiny villages, etc.  The gardens were pretty.  It used
to be a British Sanitorium for higher ups but the
buildings have all gone to ruin.

As you can see.

What used to be a pretty gazebo.
Lots of beautiful trees and flowers.

The sanitorium and the gardens were
built over 100 years ago.

Some of the trees are original,
like the silk cotton tree or Kapok
Tree.  these are over 100 years old
and over 200 feet tall.

We tried to get a picture of these school kids, but
they kept running away, then saying, "Give us
money if you take picture."

These tall palms line the roads
the gardens. The gardens
originally covered 160 acres
but only 3 are used today and the
rest are a preserve.

Look at the menu for this restaurant - pretty
appetizing.  I thought the Continental dishes
were interesting. I don't think I ever saw
gizzard sauce in Europe.

A fancy barbecue made from a tire rim.

I gave Aba two recipes for chocolate cake for
Sister Brubaker's birthday and she kind of combined them
and made a very delicious cake.  We celebrated with
some of our friends. Pres Brubaker had our favorite tailor make
this beautiful skirt and blouse for her.

Two of our cute sisters in some of the
dresses the Brubakers brought in
their container that a friend had
donated.  We have REALLY used
all the things we brought.

Or favorite fruit stand right around the corner
from the MTC.

The Brobbey's, friends from the Netherlands who
have now moved to Ghana - he's from here and
she's from the Carribean.  They met up with us at the
temple.  It was very fun to visit and catch up after 5
years - we'll do more together.

Sister Stutz is serving with her husband as family history consultants and they come out to the MTC and help us a lot.  Here she is with one of our missionaries she adopted and helped her prepare for her mission, even drove her to the MTC on intake day.  This sister LOVES Sister Stutz.  They ran into each other at the temple.

We were going to celebrate Sister Brubaker's birthday on Thursday night in Accra to a nice restaurant that has one night where they serve Mexican food.  Unfortunately, we couldn't even get out of Tema because of bad traffic and ended up at Mo's Barbecue really close to the MTC.  Another unfortunate decision as it was not good!  So two days later, we drove to Accra to a nice pizza restaurant that was delicious!  We had a very enjoyable evening together in a air conditioned part of the restaurant.  I think the AC made the food taste better.

  1. I loved the pics of the botanical garden and the decrepit buildings. Like a ghost town.
